WELCOME TO THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Our newsletter goes out to the school community every Wednesday. It’s put together by the MES PTA communications committee, and is meant to provide parents with crucial information regarding the school in one place. Please spend a few minutes reading the newsletter every week – it will keep you informed and enrich your student’s educational experience!
A NOTE FROM THE PTA CO-PRESIDENTS
The MES Parent-Teacher Association welcomes you to another promising year at Montclair Elementary! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer break, and is now ready for another year of learning and fun. As a PTA, we work collaboratively to support our school through various fundraising events and social opportunities. We are proud to bring you quality enrichment programs such as art, music, drama, garden, and playground supervision. We welcome you to join us at our first PTA meeting onThursday, September 17, 7pm in the Multipurpose Room. Come meet our enrichment staff and learn more about the programs.

BIGTENT – DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP
Beginning this school year, we have moved to BigTent for all school-related communications. In addition to school-wide notices, teachers and room reps will also use BigTent for classroom communications – so please sign up for your class subgroups. **You will not receive classroom-related emails if you do not sign up for your class subgroup in BigTent!**
The school calendar will also reside on BigTent. Once you have an account, you can download the BigTent app on your mobile device for easy access. For instructions on how to get connected, click here. Have questions or need help? Email PTA VP of Technology .

MORNING DROP-OFF REMINDER
With so many children arriving at the school in the morning, it’s imperative that parents and guardians follow our safety guidelines regarding morning drop-off. A few highlights:
- Do not park in the drop-off only zone in front of the school, or in the red zone in the parking lot.
- Do not stop or park in a yellow, handicapped, or red zone.
- If you’re dropping off at the parking lot, please pull all the way forward to the fence.
- Please drop your student off as quickly as possible to keep traffic flowing.
- Don’t block neighboring driveways or make illegal U-turns.
- Parent volunteers in neon vests are there to help open your doors and get students on their way.

REGISTRATION FOR ASE NOW OPEN
Registration for After-School Enrichment fall classes is now open and will run until Monday, September 7. Classes begin the week of September 14. Most classes are very popular and fill up fast, so don’t delay signing up your student(s). There are 22 dynamic and diverse offerings, all on campus – everything from Magic to Lego Engineering, Origami to Chorus, Drama to Chess, Cooking to Chemistry, and many more. There are offerings for each grade level, including classes for Transitional Kindergartners. To view the class calendar and register for a class, visit the ASE page on our website. There, you will also find information on classes offered by our partners at Montclair Rec: Martial Arts, Soccer, Tennis, Gymnastics, to name a few. ROOM REPS NEEDED
Room representatives are still needed for some of the classes. This is a great way to support your child’s teacher and class. Volunteer today and help make this a terrific year of learning and fun for all students and their families. To volunteer, please contact or .
OTTER WALK 2015 – MARK YOUR CALENDARS
Our fall walk-a-thon and biggest family-friendly fundraiser is Saturday,October 24, 8am – 4pm. Last year, we reached 90% participation. This year our goal is 100% participation. Every family should plan to attend. More details to come!
Otter Walk Planning Meeting, Thursday, September 3 at 7:30 pm (New to the Otter Walk? Come at 7:00 for a pre-meeting to learn more), Montclair Multipurpose Room.
Calling all current committee members and those interested in getting more involved with the planning for this year’s Otter Walk. Come and meet new friends and hear updates from volunteers regarding various aspects of the event. We welcome new kinder parents and returning parents–this is a great and rewarding way to get involved. if you plan to attend or would like more information about how you can help.
We are still looking to fill many key roles:
- Recycling/Green Team
- Tech Liaison
- First Aid
- Class Rep: Every class has an Otter Walk rep! Your job? Get everyone excited to attend the Otter Walk!
- Fundraising and Sponsorship: Work with a team to solicit event and activity sponsorships from area businesses. This is a chance to really make a difference in the amount of money we raise this year. Shadows needed! Learn the job as you work with experienced volunteers: Signs/Decorations, Check-in/Check-out, Sound, Otter Shop, Face Painting, Fundraising Prizes, Lap prizes, Volunteer Recruitment, Pay-to-Play Parties, Publicity, Design. There is a committee for every interest!
Two new lunch menu items- taco and chili- will feature organic beef! This latest addition to OUSD’s school lunch menu was a featured article in the East Bay Express last week. OUSD “will start serving organic ground beef sourced from Mindful Meats, a Point Reyes Station-based purveyor of beef that comes exclusively from retired dairy cows. It’s the same beef whose gourmet qualities have earned the praise of some of the Bay Area’s top chefs.” To read the full article, please click here. There are also a few changes to the lunch menu after the first two weeks of school. Mondays will be no longer strictly “meatless,” and will change to being “lean” Wednesdays. Meatless options will be now available every day. As a reminder, we are offering free lunch for Kindergartners until September 25. JOIN THE DADS’ CLUB!
We are parents of kids at Montclair Elementary who volunteer to help the school in whatever way we can. We have a wide variety of skills and abilities; some folks are great at fixing things and some are great at leading or helping out with events. We appreciate everyone’s talents. We host events that raise money for the school. And, we have a lot of fun along the way. Membership is free – although the experience is priceless. Our first meeting of the school year will be on Wednesday,September 9, 7:30pm, Montclair Golf Course (2477 Monterey Blvd, near Park Blvd and Highway 13). Visit our website for more information.
