The Otter Walk is just 31 days away….

Help your child(ren) set up their dojiggy site this week! Help your children set up their fundraising site at otterwalk.dojiggy.com. Have them write a personal statement (or record a video of younger kiddos) and share the link to their site with family and friends via email and social media. You’ll be amazed at how quickly small pledges can add up! (And don’t forget about matching gifts!) Need directions?  Check your Otter Walk packet or go to http://bit.ly/dojiggyinstructions for all the directions or emaildojiggy@montclairschool.com.

You can find additional sponsor forms and receipts for your donors on our website, http://montclairschool.com/otterwalk/. All proceeds from the Otter Walk support MES Enrichment Programs – library, drama, art, garden, music, recess supervisors, and so much more!

Pay-to-Plays! Deadline to sign up to host an event is Friday, October 9. This is a parent- or teacher-hosted party that is sold at the Otter Walk to raise money for the MES PTA. The parties take place throughout the year and can be just for kids, adult only or festivities the entire family can enjoy. Past parties have included making fairy houses, minecraft classes, scavenger hunts, wine and beer tasting, mushroom foraging and hikes!

That sounds awesome – How do I get involved? You can sign up for parties at the Otter Walk or better yet, host your own event! Email the details of your party (who, what, when, where) to paytoplay@montclairschool.com no later than Friday, October 9. Need Inspiration? The Pay to Play Committee has a bunch of great ideas and can connect you with other hosts. Hosting a Pay-to-Play event is a great way to build community and raise money for our kids!

We need boxes! Our Super Otter Walk decorations committee is in need of large-scale, tall boxes (think refrigerator). Have one? Email otterwalk-chairs@montclairschool.com to arrange pickup or drop-off.

Want to Volunteer or have questions?  Contact Otter Walk co-chairs Pilar Strutin-Belinoff, Katy Geisert, Sonia Chopra, and Ginger Cook  otterwalk-chairs@montclairschool.com

Comfort packs are due this Friday, September 25. Each student must turn in a food/comfort packet in the event of an earthquake or other emergency. Our school’s emergency supplies will allow us to provide basic supplies of food, water and juice for the children, but nothing brings comfort to a child like a snack and something special from home. Comfort packets will be stored with the school’s emergency supplies and will be handed out if needed. Ask your Safety & Disaster Preparedness Room Rep for more info.

Students and their families are invited to enjoy a night under the stars, Friday, October 9 (exact time TBD), in the Multipurpose Room and Upper Yard. The event will be hosted by Otter Walk Prize Committee to celebrate our amazing 2014 Otter Walk and to get excited for our upcoming 2015 Otter Walk! The East Bay Astrological Society will set up six of their high powered telescopes on the Upper Yard for you and your family to peek through. The event will begin at twilight in the Multipurpose Room before moving to the yard. Volunteers are needed. Please contact Jeff Sanchez (sanchezjw@me.com) or Jennifer Porcinito (jporcini@yahoo.com) to volunteer or answer questions.

The next and final Volunteer Orientation opportunity for classroom parent volunteers will be held next Tuesday, September 29, 6pm in the school Library. As a reminder, if you would like to volunteer in your child’s classroom you must:

(1) Attend a Volunteer Orientation

(2) Have an updated TB Test

(3) Complete Volunteer Registration through OUSD. Click here for a link to the OUSD Volunteer portal

Pack 296 has been nurturing young boys in Montclair for 60 years now.  Cub Scouts is about having fun.  Each year scouts go fishing, camping, build and race the famous pinewood derby cars, hang out with the Oakland Fire and Police Departments, and much, much more.  Our Pack does not discriminate and is open to all young boys and all families.  If your son is in 1st through 5th grade and wants to learn more about scouts, check out our website at www.pack296cubs.org.  There you will see all the activities we’ve been up to.  We encourage everyone to attend our next information session on Wednesday, September 23, 7-8pm at the Joaquin Miller Elementary School Library.  Both parents and kids are welcome to attend.  Our first Pack Meeting is Wednesday September 30, 6:30pm – 8pm at Montera Middle School.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Montera Middle School is inviting prospective families to the Montera Information Night on Thursday, November 12, 7-8:30pm. Join Principal Avent, teachers and students, and learn about the academic programs that engage and challenge the Montera students. In addition, parents will learn about the many electives, clubs and sports programs that are available. Please plan to meet in the Montera Multipurpose Room. No need to RSVP, just plan to attend and learn more about all Montera has to offer! The school will also conduct school tours during the school day, 9-10am. If you would like more information about prospective family tours, please visit the school website at www.monteramiddleschool.org, or contact .

The Montclair Library Halloween costume swap will be held at the MES Library on Saturday, October 24, 1-4pm. Donations of gently used costumes are now accepted. These can be dropped off at the library anytime during our open hours.
