MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER — SEPTEMBER 2, 2015 VOL. 2
FIRST PTA MEETING DATE CHANGE TO SEPTEMBER 24
Due to a conflict with Montera’s back-to-school night, the date of the first PTA meeting of the year has been changed to Thursday, September 24, 7-8pm, in the Multipurpose Room. Come meet our enrichment staff and learn more about the programs we support!
BIGTENT ONLINE TRAINING
Are you a room rep, school volunteer, or teacher at Montclair who would like to learn how to use BigTent? If so, please join us for a BigTent training via Google Hangouts. You will learn how to add calendar items to your class calendar, add field trips, sign up drivers, organize class parties and more! If you are a teacher, PTA board member or room rep, you will be invited; if you are not in one of those groups and would still like to learn, please email and request an invitation. All are welcome. You can attend one of the two online trainings on Thursday, September 3, 8:15-8:45pm, or Friday, September 11, 12-12:30pm.
OTTER WALK 2015 – MARK YOUR CALENDARS

Calling all current committee members and those interested in getting more involved with the planning for this year’s Otter Walk. Come and meet new friends and hear updates from volunteers regarding various aspects of the event. We welcome new kinder parents and returning parents–this is a great and rewarding way to get involved. if you plan to attend or would like more information about how you can help.
We are still looking to fill many key roles:
· Recycling/Green Team
· Tech Liaison
· Class Rep: Every class has an Otter Walk rep! Your job? Get everyone excited to attend the Otter Walk! Tell your room parent you are interested in this fun and rewarding job.
· Fundraising and Sponsorship: Work with a team to solicit event and activity sponsorships from area businesses. This is a chance to really make a difference in the amount of money we raise this year.
· Shadows needed! Learn the job as you work with experienced volunteers: Signs/Decorations, Check-in/Check-out, Sound, Otter Shop, Face Painting, Fundraising Prizes, Lap prizes, Volunteer Recruitment, Pay-to-Play Parties, Publicity, Design. There is a committee for every interest!
AFTER-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT REGISTRATION
Registration for the After School Enrichment (ASE) program is open through Monday, September 7th. Classes begin the week of September 14th. We’ve got 22 dynamic and diverse offerings for all grade levels and all are on campus. Most classes still have spots open, including two of our new offerings: Origami (Tuesdays, open to all grades) and the award-winning Oakland Youth Chorus (Fridays, open to 2nd–5th graders who love to sing and perform). We’d especially love to see these classes get the enrollment they need so we can keep having them back again and again. And our partners next door at Montclair Rec have fun options as well: Martial Arts, Soccer, Tennis, Gymnastics, just to name a few. Check out the ASE page on the website for all the details of the program. To register for a class (and to get more details on a specific class), go to the calendar toward the bottom of the page and click on the link. More information on Montclair Rec is at the bottom of the page, below the calendar. For general questions the ASE program, please , our ASE Coordinator.
AN EVENING OF ARTS AND MUSIC
MES is happy to announce our first annual Evening of Art and Music fundraiser, on Saturday, October 10, 6-9pm, at the David Brower Center’s art gallery. MES parent Robert Greenberg will lead a program exploring the friendship between Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Mozart entitled “Papa Joe and Wolfie: Birds of a Feather.” Joining Greenberg to perform the music of Mozart will be the Alexander String Quartet. Please join us for an evening of fascinating information, beautiful music, delicious wine, and tasty bites. Tickets for this event are now on sale! Be sure to purchase your tickets before September 12 for a discounted rate: $55 for one, $100 for two. All proceeds benefit MES. More information, please click here. Questions? Contact .
CLASSROOM ENRICHMENT FUNDS
Classroom enrichment activities, such as field trips, are funded by family contributions to classroom enrichment funds. This year, we are enabling payment for class funds through Paypal using this link: http://www.montclairschool.com/about/enrichment. Stay tuned for instructions from your teachers about enrichment fund assessments for your class. Using this Paypal link will help us streamline this process and save teachers from the additional administrative task of processing payments for families. You do not need a Paypal account; you can use the link to pay, using most credit or debit cards. Alternatively, teachers can also continue to receive payments of cash or checks for the enrichment funds.
MES IS PARTNERING WITH SCHOOLA
Montclair Elementary is partnering with Schoola. What’s Schoola? It’s a great way to raise funds for our school. Schoola collects pre-loved women’s and children’s clothes, preps and sells them online, and gives 40% of the proceeds back to Montclair Elementary to help fund programs for our kids. That’s $2 out of every $5 earned back to our school. Simply click on the image to view our very own Schoola landing page where you can request a bag and view our progress and funds earned. To learn more about this program, click here for the program flyer.

Each month, Farmstead Cheese and Wines designates one school to be its “School of the Month,” and Montclair Elementary School gets that honor for September 2015! Farmstead conducts four educational and fun wine tastings per week in the shops (two per week), and charges a suggested donation of at least $1 per person. At the end of the month, donations are sent to the school. So please spread the word to your families and friends about this great fundraising opportunity. In 2014, Farmstead donated over $12,000 to local schools/PTAs through this program! Tastings: Montclair Village – Fridays 5-7:30, Saturdays 2-5. Alameda – Fridays 5:30-7:30, Saturdays 3-5.
