MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – MARCH 4, 2015 VOL. 24
CALIFORNIA HEALTH KIDS SURVEY (CHKS) – EXTENDED!
The deadline for the CHKS Survey has been extended until March 13. This is an important survey and we need your help! The information received helps school districts make decisions about what services are important and what needs to be included in the budget. The survey will also help inform individual schools about their site and identify focus areas to create a welcoming and safe community for our students. You can take the survey online: https://surveys.wested.org/csps/YP923PJ (school code: AG79WK). Help us increase our participation rate.
OTTER BALL COUNTDOWN
Three weeks away! Just three more weeks before we see you at the Otter Ball! If you haven’t yet bought your tickets for our March 28 extravaganza, don’t delay – prices go up after March 14. Buy your tickets now to lock in your savings! Need more details? Find them at www.montclairschool.com/otterball/.
The raffle is rolling! It’s time for the 2015 Otter Ball Raffle – support MES with a chance to win some amazing prizes. This year we are making it super easy to purchase tickets. Check your child’s green folder for a special envelope containing Otter Ball raffle tickets. The tickets are yours to purchase, or to offer to friends and family. If you don’t want to participate, please return them. (You and your child are not expected to sell these raffle tickets.) Read the flyer in your special envelope for full details. We hope you’ll join us at the Otter Ball, but you do not need to be at the event to win raffle prizes! And stop by our raffle table at the Montclair Sunday Farmers’ Market to say hello — we’ll be there March 8, 15, and 22.
Did you know? Julia Morgan received two prestigious posthumous accolades. In 2008, she was inducted into the California Hall of Fame; in 2014, she was awarded the AIA Gold Medal – becoming the first female architect to receive this honor.
TWO BOTS ENTER, ONE BOT LEAVES
Find out this coming Friday, March 6, 6-9pm at the Dads’ Club Kids’ Night Out presentation of Big Hero 6! Come drop off your kids in the Multipurpose Room. They’ll get pizza, popcorn, a movie and dance party; and you’ll get a night out! Pizza and snacks will begin at 6pm. Prices are $25 for the first child, $15 for every sibling after that. Proceeds benefit the Otter fund! Don’t forget blankets and pillows. Please bring a water bottle and help keep MES green. To sign up in advance, please click here. We will select one child who has RSVP’d to go free, so please register. It’ll be faster for you, too. If you don’t register, no worries; just come by and drop off your kids. For questions, please email .
Do you have questions or concerns about the Montclair cooking kitchen or OUSD nutrition? The next Nutrition Advisory Council meeting will be held at MES on Wednesday, March 11, 3-4:30pm in the Multipurpose Room. Come join us and learn the latest information about OUSD garden education, nutrition education and an update on the new OUSD central kitchen. We hope to see you there. The March cooking kitchen lunch menu is now available here. There’s a new item on the menu this month: Jambalaya!
FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT
Please join us for a fun-filled evening of science experiments on Thursday, March 12, 6-7:30pm in the Multipurpose Room. Visit science stations to learn: Why do chemical reactions explode? How big can a bubble get? How do you build a marshmallow tower? Why do chemicals change colors? How do bones work? And much more! The kids will need parental help to guide them through their process to get the maximum benefit. Therefore, this is NOT a drop off event. Parents or other adult family members are expected to participate with their child. We also need volunteers to manage the experiment stations. You do not need to be a scientist to help! You just need to arrive at 5:30pm to be trained and get ready. Please sign up through the Family Science Night link.
PARENTING WORKSHOP: DEVELOPING KIDS INTO INNOVATORS
Camp Galileo CEO and Founder, Glen Tripp, will lead this parent workshop on Wednesday, March 18, 7-8:30pm, in the Multipurpose Room. Learn five ways to encourage your kids to be innovators by being: visionary, courageous, collaborative, determined and reflective. Find how this can be applied to the Common Core curriculum to make your child more successful! There will be limited childcare, including pizza dinner, so please click here to register.
ASE CLASSES UNDER-ENROLLED
Attention K-1 Families: ASE Spring Session classes Eco-Explorers (Mondays) and Science Smorgasbord (Fridays) are currently under-enrolled and are in danger of being canceled. Don’t let that happen and sign up your kids now. Enrollment has been extended until March 9. Click here to view the flyer for more information. Classes start Monday, March 23. The full ASE schedule for the spring can be found here. For general questions about the ASE program, please email the volunteer ASE Coordinator, .
