MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 7, 2015 VOL. 18

LEARN HOW TO TRAIN DRAGONS!

This Friday, January 9, the Dads’ Club Kids Night Out will feature How To Train Your Dragon 2! Get your kids excited for back to school and give yourselves a well-earned holiday break. Come drop off your kids, 6-9pm in the Multipurpose Room. They’ll get pizza, popcorn, a movie and a dance party; and you’ll get a night out. Pizza and snacks will begin at 6pm. Prices are $25 for the first child, $15 for every sibling after that. Proceeds benefit the Montclair Elementary Dad’s Club – “Help us help the school!” Don’t forget blankets and pillows. Please bring a water bottle and help the environment. To sign up in advance, click here. We’ll select one child who has RSVP’d to go for free, so please register. It’s faster for you too! If you don’t register, no worries – just come by and drop off your kids. For questions, please email .

SPELLING BEE NEXT WEEK!

Our annual school Spelling Bee will be held Tuesday, January 13. Help support and encourage our Montclair spellers by wearing yellow and black, or anything with bees! See the attached flyer for additional information.

COMING SOON: ART SHOW AND DRAMA PERFORMANCE

Mark your calendars for an evening of exciting showcases. On Thursday, January 22, we will have our art show and drama performance. The Art Show, presented by Grades 3-5, will run from 6-7pm. This will be followed by a Drama Performance of Grade 2 from 6:30-7:30pm. We hope to see you all there!

THE PTA NEEDS AN AUDITOR

Are you a financially savvy person? Are you interested in digging into the details of PTA finances? The PTA is in need of YOU! We need an auditor to join our Board. This person is responsible for reviewing the books and records of the PTA and providing recommendations for improvements regarding fiscal policies and procedures. The work can be done on your own time, so it’s great for a working parent. If you are interested, please contact Amy Omand at .

SO YOU WANNA DANCE?

There’s still space to join the MES Disco Dance Pay-to-Play Party on Saturday, February 21st at 7pm! Shake your groove thang at this far out dance party hosted by the Montclair Cool and the Gang at the Prasad Party Palace. We’ll be featuring boogie-licious music from the 70s, but we’ll also include the 60s, 80s, 90s…anything that gets everyone on the dance floor and kicking out those winter blues. Tickets are $50 each and benefit PTA programs at the school. If you’re down, email Chantal Walsh at .

COMMUNITY NEWS

MONTERA WINTER MUSIC CONCERT

Want to learn more about the music program at Montera?  See the amazing Mr. Swihart in action? Come to the Winter Music Concert on January 15, 6:30pm, in the Montera Auditorium. Hear what the Beginning Band, Beginning Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Orff/World Music Ensemble have been working on this year. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Montera, meet current parents, teachers and students and support arts education in OUSD schools!

THE MOSAIC PROJECT PRESENTATION

Next Friday, January 9, The Mosaic Project will be holding Black Lives Matter: A Safe Space for Children at our Oakland office (580 Grand Ave, 2nd floor, Oakland, CA 94610) from 5-8 pm for elementary and middle school-aged children and their families. There will be some Mosaic Youth Leaders and staff present as resources, but it will be facilitated by members of the Children’s Board and be a child-centered event. We want to give the children a chance to talk to one another and know that their voices are being heard. In true Mosaic style, we will include game-tivities, art-tivities, small and large group discussion, snacks-on-snacks, and music and singing by Lake Merritt. All children are welcome to attend. No previous affiliation with Mosaic is needed. Please RSVP to Kara Murray at .
