OTTER BALL COUNTDOWN
The Otter Ball is eight weeks away! We’re looking forward to MES’ flagship spring fundraiser on Saturday, March 28. It’ll be held in a brand-new venue this year: the beautiful, Julia Morgan-designed Berkeley City Club (www.berkeleycityclub.com). Check out your green folders this week for participation and donation information. As a countdown, we’re going to share a Julia Morgan factoid each week to get you inspired and excited about the Otter Ball’s gorgeous new home.
Did you know? Architect Julia Morgan is a homegrown gal! Born in San Francisco in 1872, she attended Oakland High School and UC Berkeley. She graduated from Cal in 1894 with a degree in civil engineering – and was the only woman in her engineering class.

SAVE THE BOXTROLLS!
On Friday, February 6, the Dads’ Club Kids’ Night Out will feature The Boxtrolls. Come drop off your kids from 6-9pm in the Multipurpose Room. They’ll get pizza, popcorn, a movie and dance party; and you’ll get a night out! Pizza and snacks will begin at 6pm. Prices are $25 for the first child, $15 for every sibling after that. Proceeds benefit this year’s Family Fun Day fund – let’s put the FUN in our family day! Don’t forget blankets and pillows. Please bring a water bottle and help keep MES green. To sign up in advance, please click here. We will select one child who has RSVP’d to go free, so please register. It’ll be faster for you, too. If you don’t register, no worries; just come by and drop off your kids. For questions, please email.
OUSD TEACHER CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS
The PTA would like to share information that we, as parents, have gathered to better understand the OUSD teacher contract negotiations. We all love our teachers at Montclair and want them to be respected for the hard work and dedication they show every day, teaching our children. If you’d like more information on the issue, here are a few articles/blogs that may be useful:
- From OUSD, An Overview of OUSD-OEA Contract Negotiations
- Article in The Montclarion, “Joaquin Miller Elementary Teachers Protest ContractTalks“
- Great Oakland Public Schools blog posts about the Teacher Negotiations
To get more involved or if you like to share your opinion with OUSD, you can attend the OUSD School Board Meeting tonight, January 28, or email our OUSD School Board Member .
We are working to gather a panel of interested parties (OUSD rep, teacher rep, etc.) for our February 18 PTA meeting. If you’d like to see or hear something specific, please contact PTA President or EVP External Affairs with your thoughts.
