MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – JANUARY 21, 2015 VOL. 20
A LETTER FROM DR. SUSAN
Dear Parents, we would like to make you aware of a situation that is causing some concern. It starts with good- natured teasing by parents when they see a boy girl friendship. The parent might say, “Is that your girlfriend?” or “Is that your boyfriend?” What an adult might think is cute is often uncomfortable and awkward for the child. It can even create more teasing among the kids. We encourage children to respect all friendships and to not tease about boyfriend and girlfriend issues. When we see this going on in a class, we conduct classroom discussions reminding the kids that all friendships are to be respected and no such teasing is allowed. We’ve been fairly successful with this and the kids are often grateful for the boundary and the freedom to just be kids. “Life is short; childhood is shorter.” It’s a worthy effort to protect this time for children, since the culture will push them into pairing up soon enough. We hope that this has increased awareness and that if your child has a friend of a different gender we encourage you to simply appreciate that friendship. Thank you for your continued support.
