MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – NOVEMBER 18, 2015

REGISTRATION FOR ASE CLASSES NOW OPEN

Registration for Winter Session After School Enrichment classes is open through Friday, December 4. We’ve got an awesome array of options––something for every kid in every grade: Toyology, Origami, Chess, Chorus, art classes, music classes, science classes, Lego engineering, Cooking, Magic, Drama, Dance, Theatre, and much more. Many classes fill up quickly, so don’t delay signing up your kid(s). Find the schedule of classes and other important information on the ASE page of the MES website (http://www.montclairschool.com/ase). For specific questions about providers’ programs, contact the providers directly. For general questions about the ASE program, contact the ASE Parent Volunteer, Jared Karol ().

BOOK DRIVE!

Montclair Elementary Student Council will be having a book drive November 30-December 14 to support a local OUSD elementary school. Please start thinking of books that you may want to clean out. Thanksgiving Week might be a perfect time to give thanks, make space, and help children who are in need. Details about where to turn in book donations to come.

DECEMBER IS “GIVE THE GIFT OF KINDNESS MONTH”

In December, our school community will be emphasizing showing kindness to others. The value of teaching kindness at school and building the bridge with home and community is an Otter Value. If you have any further questions, email teachers Ms. Turcitu () or Ms. Seltzer ().

TAKE THE OUSD ENROLLMENT SURVEY

OUSD is currently seeking feedback from families regarding its policies and procedures relating to student assignments. The survey is intended to allow OUSD to hear from the community about experiences enrolling students in Oakland public schools to help inform improvements.

SAFETY REMINDER

We’d like to remind everyone that “smash-and-grab” incidents tend to increase around this time of year. Here are a few safety reminders:

·      Never leave any items visible in your car.

·      Do not transfer valuable items to your trunk after parking. Someone may be watching.

·      Be aware of your surroundings at all times – don’t be distracted by looking at your phone.

·      If you are concerned that someone is following your vehicle, don’t drive home; instead, drive to a safe public place.

Also, a reminder to never leave your kids unattended at school before 8:20 am or after school is released.

If you are the victim of any type of property crime or theft, be sure to report it to the Oakland Police Department.  The allocation of police resources is based in part on crime statistics, so please report every incident, even if it seems minor. This can easily be done by filing a citizen crime report online.
