MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – OCTOBER 8, 2014 VOL. 8

OCTOBER PTA MEETING

All parents are invited to join us next Wednesday, October 15, 7-8:30pm for an update from PTA President Amy Omand, followed by a discussion by our own Dr. Susan DeMersseman. Dr. Susan will discuss the daily challenges of parenting and how to deal with them, as well as talk about the importance of social-emotional learning. If you have any specific questions you would like Dr. Susan to address, please email your questions by October 14th to .

Childcare will be available from 7-8:30pm in Room 104. Reservations for childcare can be found here:

There will be NO dinner served at this meeting, due to the fact that we have not found a Hospitality Lead yet. The PTA is in immediate need of a Hospitality Lead. If you are interested or know someone who would like to volunteer for this role, please email Corinne Welpton at .

For questions about this meeting or topic suggestions for future meetings, please send an email to .

STUDENT COMFORT PACKETS DUE OCTOBER 10TH

Each child must turn in a food/comfort packet in the event of an earthquake or other emergency. Our school’s emergency supplies will allow us to provide basic supplies of food, water and juice for the children, but nothing brings comfort to a child like a snack and something special from home. Comfort packets will be stored with the school’s emergency supplies and will be handed out if needed. Ask your Safety & Disaster Preparedness Room Rep for more info!

NO AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASSES OCT 13-17

Please note that there will be NO ASE classes October 13-17 due to parent/teacher conferences.

OTTER WALK UPDATE

The Otter Walk is just TEN DAYS away!  We hope you’re planning to attend our biggest student-centered fundraising and community-building event of the year on Saturday, October 18, 8am-4pm.  Many families stay all day, but if yours can’t, be sure to join us for a lap or two!

Volunteer at the Otter Walk. We can’t do this without the help of every family!  So far, only 25% of volunteer slots have been filled.  We still have 200 shifts to fill!  Sign up by clicking here.

Pay-to-Plays. Arrive early to have your pick of the Pay-to-Play offerings.  Pay-to-Play sign-ups open at 8:30am sharp.  This year, we have some fabulous events including a Penguins and Pajamas Sleepover at the Academy of Sciences in SF with Principal Bloom (2/20), a Luau Party at Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge in Alameda (5/9) and a Family Halloween Party on coveted Saroni Drive (10/31)!

Help your student secure sponsors. Ask neighbors, family, friends, and colleagues—it’s all for a great cause!  For tips, see our website. Each student has a personal website at otterwalk.dojiggy.com.  Instructions for setting up and personalizing student websites are in the Otter Walk packet.  Email friends, family, and co-workers to ask for donations—or post to Facebook!

Otter Walk Training Program.  Friday, October 17 (Minimum Day).  Meet at the garden at 1:45pmwith your parent or guardian.

The famous Dads’ Club Tri-Tip pre-sale is now available. You cannot miss this Niman Ranch beef, rubbed with the secret Dads’ Club Rub. Price is $25 per tri-tip and available two ways this year: The Usual (cooked) and The Raw (cryovac raw). Place your order by clicking here, or you can go to the school office for a paper copy. You can pick your orders at the Otterwalk Café TOWARDS THE END OF THE OTTER WALK, please! For questions, please email .

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE OTTER BALL

Mark your calendars for Saturday March 28th, 2015 for the annual Otter Ball gala! This year’s festivities will be held at a new location: the beautiful Julia Morgan-designed Berkeley City Club (www.berkeleycityclub.com), also known as the  “Little Castle.” The Otter Ball is a chance for our community to come together to enjoy delicious food and drink, participate in silent and live auctions, and sign up for fabulous bid board events — with all proceeds to support Montclair Elementary School. Don’t miss it!
