MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER – OCTOBER 15, 2014 VOL. 9

OCTOBER PTA MEETING TODAY

All parents are invited to join us this evening, 7-8:30pm in the Multipurpose Room, for an update from PTA President Amy Omand, followed by a discussion by our own Dr. Susan DeMersseman. Dr. Susan will discuss the daily challenges of parenting and how to deal with them, friendships, bullying, and the importance of social-emotional learning. If you haven’t heard Dr. Susan speak before, she is amazing and has many insights on the challenges our children face!

Childcare will be available from 7-8:30pm in Room 104 (includes a pizza dinner). Reservations for childcare can be found here:

THE OTTER WALK IS JUST 3 DAYS AWAY!

We hope every family will join us THIS Saturday, October 18, 8am-4pm.

Plan to stay the entire day (but if you can’t, join us for a lap or two). Hang out with friends and get to know others while helping our school. See our website for more details on the day, info on prizes, extra sponsor and permission forms, and more.  And note, this event WILL be held, rain or shine!

WE REALLY NEED VOLUNTEERS! We need the help of every family to make this happen.  So far, only 55% of volunteer slots have been filled. We still have 100 shifts to fill. Sign up for a shift or two by clicking here. Make your child proud – volunteer!

Pay-to-Plays ARE HERE! Sign up for these teacher- or parent-hosted events at the Otter Walk and proceeds go directly to the PTA. With events for kids, parents, and families, everyone can get in on the fun! See attached calendar of this year’s events and mark your calendars now! Or visit our website.

OTTERBUCKS. This year, we are doing away with cash at the Otter Walk. We will be using tickets (“OtterBucks”) for food, face painting, snacks, etc. Credit cards will still be accepted at Pay-to-Play.  Save time and purchase OtterBucks now at otterwalk.dojiggy.com. Just click the “Tri-Tip and Tickets” link on the left side of the home page. You can pick up your OtterBucks at check-in on Saturday.

If anyone has a cryovac machine, ziploc baggies, or a Gatorade jug to donate or loan for the Otter Walk, please contact Corinne Welpton at .

SHOO THE FLU VACCINE DAY

Shoo the Flu Vaccine Day is taking place on November 4. All pre-K through fifth graders will have access to no-cost flu vaccines given by health professionals. All students who participate are required to have a signed consent form from their parent or guardian. You may have already received the brightly colored folder or will receive it soon. Even if your child will not be receiving the vaccine, please return the consent form for future planning purposes. Let’s Shoo the Flu!

SCHOOL TOURS VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

We will be conducting tours for 2015-2016 incoming families in November, December and January (2015). The OUSD Wellness Council will host the “OUSD Freshtival: Opportunity to engage in the OUSD Wellness Policy” on Wednesday, October 29, 5-7:30pm, at Lakeview Auditorium (746 Grand Avenue, 2nd Floor). The event will feature keynote speaker Jennifer LeBarre, Director of OUSD Nutrition Services. This is a great opportunity for parents and students to learn more about wellness efforts across OUSD, as well as different opportunities to get involved in wellness work at their school or with the district. There will be interactive activities around the different aspects of the Wellness Policy and a raffle of great prizes including bikes, ball sets, backpacks and more. If you are interested in attending, please fill out our RSVP form here.
