First Principal’s Message

Welcome to Montclair Elementary School! It is truly one of the shining stars and top schools in the Oakland Unified School District . The faculty, staff and I work hard to provide a stimulating, challenging and enriching academic environment for our students. Below are some important school announcements and ideas of how you can be involved in your child’s education.

Why Attendance Matters!
Think skipping a day of school is no big deal? Think again. Attached is a letter I received from Dr. Smith, OUSD Superintendent, regarding school attendance. As you can see, as a school we are not meeting district targets. The letter cites the amount of money lost because students are not in school. During these difficult budget times, every dollar matters and is vitally needed by our school to provide the education we all want for your student. More importantly, my experience is that empty chairs do not learn much. Your child must be at school, on time, each and every day to maximize their academic potential. Of course, if your child is running a fever or vomiting, please do not send them to school. Otherwise, send them to school. It is amazing how the routine of the day’s activities cures lots of upset stomachs, marginal sore throats and coughs. Please, do not take your child out of school for trips and family vacations. Independent study is great, but do it on designated school breaks, please.

Attendance counts, each and every day. Please help us help your child succeed.

Be An Active Participant In Your Child’s Education
You can help in any of the following ways.

  • Actively supervise and review homework.
  • Read to and with your child.
  • Get to know your child’s teacher and classmates.
  • Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer!  Find out how to Get Involved to help our great school serve our kids.

Please do not hesitate to speak with me if I can be of any assistance.
