DURING-SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS UPDATE
Welcome Sofie Siegmann, our new Art instructor! Sofie is an accomplished artist and teacher, and we are thrilled to have her at our school. You can view her work here. Grades 3-5 begin Art this week (Art for Grades K-2 is scheduled in the winter/spring). We need Art class volunteers. If interested, please contact for more information.
Library, music, and small group specialists (teaching assistants) for all grades also start this week. Each class receives 50 minutes of library and music each week. Grades 3-5 get 50 minutes of Art each week in fall/winter. Each class receives 2 hours of small group specialist each week. Garden for Grades 1-5 and Drama for Grade 2 will start later in the month.
Technology education is changing this year. In response to teacher feedback, teachers will be implementing technology in their own classrooms, instead of through a separate computer class and instructor. This way, teachers will have greater freedom to use the iPads and Chrome Books to support curriculum and student learning.
We are hiring for the Kindergarten infused motor skill class instructor. If you know of an occupational therapist (not current MES parents) with experience working with children, please contact .
KITCHEN UPDATE: FINGER ID SCANNING
The finger scanning process will begin this Friday, September 5th. To get through the entire school body, we anticipate that the process will take a few days to complete.
In case you missed the information that went out last week, MES will be piloting a new identification system, using biometrics (finger measurements) that will allow students to simply press their index finger on the reader and it will link to their student ID #. These are not fingerprints. Biometric measurements cannot be converted to fingerprint ID.
Finger IDs will help our lunch lines move efficiently and will require less maintenance of ID cards. This system will reduce the number of lost or misplaced cards and eliminate the chance of students mistakenly using someone else’s card. If you have questions about the implementation, contact us at .
OTTER WALK 2014–MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Our fall walk-a-thon and biggest student-centered fundraising and community-building event of the year is Saturday, October 18th, 8am-4pm. We reached 90% participation last year. This year our goal is 100% participation, so please be sure that your child can make it. He or she will have a blast! Details to come.
Otter Walk Planning Meeting, THIS Thursday, September 4th, 7:30pm at Crogan’s (back room).
Calling all current committee members and those interested in getting more involved with this year’s Otter Walk. Come and meet new friends and hear details about the event. We welcome kinder parents and returning parents – this is a great and rewarding way to get involved at MES. RSVP to if you plan to attend or would like more information about how you can help.
We are still looking to fill many key roles:
Fundraising and Sponsorship: New this year! Work with a team to solicit event and activity sponsorship from area businesses. This is a chance to make a difference in the amount of money we raise!
Class Rep: Every class has an Otter Walk rep! Your job? Get everyone excited to attend the Otter Walk!
Shadows needed! Learn the job as you work with experienced volunteers: Check-in/Check-out, Sound, Otter Shop, Face Painting, Signs/Decorations, Fundraising Prizes, Lap Prizes, Recycling, Volunteer Recruitment, Pay-to-Play Parties, Raffle, Publicity, Design. There is a committee for every interest!
